in 2021 New Zealand's Forest and Bird 'Bird of the Year' competition included the bat for the first time, (it is considered 'manu' in Te Ao Māori, along with birds and all things that fly) and it won! this was a major coup for conservation awareness as both the short tailed and long tailed bat (both called pekapeka in te reo māori) are not often sighted, and aren't well known in public consciousness, something that conservation advocates are trying their best to change.
